Links Between Gastric Bypass, Diabetes, Obesity and Suicide

CBS’ 60 Minutes (Sunday, April 20th), featured a segment regarding the latest benefits of gastric bypass. According to Dr. Neil Hutcher, the primary medical expert interviewed for the show, the operation stops diabetes-2 almost instantly, with a success rate of 85-90%.

However, Dr. David Cummings (from the Univ of Washington Medical Center) warns that the bypass does not mean going back to a normal weight. On average, patients lose about 1/3 of their weight. This means that the severely obese become mildly obese and the obese down to overweight.

Surprisingly, suicide rates go up for those who have undergone this operation. Dr. Hutcher’s observation is that most of his patients were already depressed to begin with. Upon losing weight after the operation, there is a temporary euphoria, then they realize that the cause of their depression is still there, inspite of losing the pounds.

This goes back to my contention all along: that diabetes-2 begins and ends in the mind. People lack either:

  • the unbiased knowledge or
  • the earth-moving motivation, or
  • BOTH

to prevent or reverse this disease for themselves.

While the operation biologically restricts your ability to digest food, in my opinion, it is also a significant placebo in of itself.

I wonder what would happen if patients were made to believe that they had a bypass?

Do you think they will suppress their appetites on their own? Interesting study, wouldn’t it?
